Amberjacks Rally Past Sturgeon 8-7

June 3 2023 The Monterey Amberjacks rallied for an 8-7 victory over the Martinez Sturgeon. Monterey scored in the second and third innings before breaking open a 5-4 game with a three-run sixth. Martinez answered with one run in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead, but the Amberjacks scored once in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings to complete the comeback.

Monterey collected 11 hits, led by Chaison Miklich, Rodney Scarver, Dominic Scotti and Sean Bennett with two apiece. Bennett drove in three runs, while Anthony Ward, Miklich, Scarver and Scotti each added an RBI. Miklich and Scotti homered for the Amberjacks, who also received three walks and two runs from Ryan Diaz.

Martinez also finished with 11 hits. Eric Whitfield went 3-for-5 with a home run, a run and an RBI, while Jackson Kea went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Sam Freedman added a home run and three RBIs, and Tony Riley homered and drove in a run. Martinez hit three home runs overall, with Freedman, Whitfield and Riley each going deep.

Dominic Scotti earned the win after allowing one hit and no runs over two innings with two strikeouts. Greg Salazar started for Monterey and worked seven innings, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs while striking out eight. Martinez starter Craig Broadman pitched eight innings with 10 hits, six runs, five earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts, while Colt Powledge took the loss after allowing two runs in 1.1 innings.
