Martinez Sturgeon Pull Away for 16-8 Win Over Monterey Amberjacks

June 16 2023 The Martinez Sturgeon overcame an early deficit with a seven-run fourth inning and defeated the Monterey Amberjacks 16-8. Martinez totaled 16 hits, including home runs by Luke Johnson and Eric Whitfield, while Monterey finished with nine hits and four errors.

Monterey scored once in the first and twice in each of the next two innings to build a 5-0 lead. Martinez answered with seven runs in the fourth to move in front 7-6, then added three runs in the sixth, three in the eighth and three in the ninth to pull away. Monterey scored once in the fourth and twice in the seventh but could not keep pace.

Johnson went 3-for-6 with three runs two RBI and a home run. Dave Kyriacou also collected three hits, including two doubles, and drove in two runs, while Whitfield scored twice and had three RBI with his fourth homer of the season. Nick Adgar and Cain Agis each added two hits for Martinez.

Harrison Aiken earned the win with a complete-game effort, allowing nine hits and eight runs, six earned, while walking four and striking out seven over nine innings. Nick Samudio took the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on six hits in four innings. Jonathan Garza worked three innings for Monterey, and Martinez held a 16-9 advantage in hits in the high-scoring game.
