Sturgeon Hold Off Amberjacks 9-4

July 8 2023 The Martinez Sturgeon defeated the Monterey Amberjacks 9-4 after collecting 13 hits and scoring in five separate innings. Martinez opened with two runs in the first, added two in the fifth and one in the sixth, then broke the game open with three runs in the seventh before adding another run in the ninth. Monterey scored twice in the fifth and twice in the seventh but could not close the gap.

Eric Whitfield led the Sturgeon offense with two hits, a home run and four RBI. Sam Freedman added a home run and two RBI, while Jon Fargnoli and Paul Carreno each collected three hits. Luke Johnson had one hit, one RBI and a stolen base, and Jackson Kea also drove in a run. Martinez finished with two home runs and three stolen bases.

Craig Broadman earned the win for Martinez with a complete-game effort, allowing nine hits and four runs while striking out four and walking three over nine innings. Joseph Barrons took the loss for Monterey after six innings, and Nick Samudio and Tristan Cavazos also pitched in relief. The Sturgeon committed one error compared with four for the Amberjacks.
