Sturgeon Hold Off Seaweed 12-11

May 29 2024 The Martinez Sturgeon built an early lead and held on for a 12-11 victory over the Vallejo Seaweed. Martinez collected 21 hits and scored five runs in the first inning, then added single runs in the fourth and fifth before breaking a 7-7 tie with a five-run eighth. Vallejo answered with three runs in the ninth but could not complete the comeback.

Erik Whitfield led Martinez with five hits in six at-bats, including two doubles, while Tony Riley went 3-for-6. Austin Micheli finished 2-for-5 with a home run, a triple and four RBI. Jon Fargnoli added two hits, two runs and two RBI, and Austin Micheli scored twice. Vallejo’s Nick Dibennetto had three hits and an RBI, while J.T. Reed went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Henry Paulino hit Vallejo’s only home run and scored three runs.

Dillon Ponce earned the win for Martinez after allowing seven hits and six runs, four earned, in six innings. He walked three and struck out three. Kevin Consolazio took the loss for Vallejo, surrendering five runs on three hits in one inning. Christian Zellner started for Vallejo and allowed seven runs, four earned, on 16 hits over seven innings with six strikeouts.

Martinez finished with five errors and Vallejo committed two. The Sturgeon’s five-run eighth provided the decisive cushion, although Vallejo trimmed the deficit to one run with its three-run ninth.
